Itwasrainingheavilyoutsideandthecloudshadturnedtoheavygraymolassesshiftingslowlyacrossafeaturelesssky.Nowsafelyinsidetheostentatioushotel,thediminutiveprofessorfoundhimselfweavinghiswaybetweenthesharpSavilleRowsuitsandinternationaldesigneroutfitsofhighsociety.Hefeltlikeacarpoutofwater,tryingtofreeitselffromatangleofweeds.Helookedandfeltoutofplace.HewasasmallbaldingmaninacheapgrayGuangdong-manufacturedpolyester-mixsuitwhostillcouldn’tgetovertheexcitementofwhathadjusthappenedinhisnativeChina.

Theprofessor’staxi,ahulkingblackvehicleofthelikehehadneverseenbefore,haddroppedhimofftwoblocksdowntheroad.Hehadbeenforcedtowalktherestoftheway,rainwatercoalescingonhissuit.HehadhadsometroubleexplainingtoacoupleofNYPDofficersonbulkychromeandfiberglasselectricmotorbikesthathewasaninvitedguesttotheforum.Theyhadscrutinizedhissmartcard,eyinghissuitsuspiciously.Oneofthecopshadswipedthesmartcardonawirelessreaderonhiswristandwaitedforthesystemtoqueryaremotedatabaseandebackwitharesult.Theyhadlookedliketheydidn’texpecthimtobeauthenticated.
