我不曾听说过有什么灵丹妙药可以缓和你提到的那种强烈的本能的欲望；就算我听说过，我想自己也不会告诉你。结婚才是最合适的疗法，也是人类最初的自然状态，你能从婚姻中找到真正的幸福。你不赞成现在就结婚的理由似乎站不住脚。你认为推迟结婚可以带来间接的利益，这些益处不仅难以保证，而且比起结婚成家本身，这些益处也不足挂齿。男人只有与女人相结合，才算完整。分开时，女人缺乏男人那强壮的体魄和坚毅的理智；男人缺少女人那种温柔、敏感和非凡的洞察力。结合在一起时，他们就会在社会上大显身手。一个单身男子的价值远不如他在结婚后所具有的价值那么大。他就如同一头肢体不全的动物、一把残缺不全的剪刀。
你如果娶到一个勤俭节约、身体健康的妻子，那么在她勤俭持家的辅佐下，你在事业上再继续勤奋努力，肯定会积聚一份殷实的财富。

My dear friend,
I know of no Medicine fit to diminish the violent natural inclination you mention； and if I did, I think I should not communicate it to you. Marriage is the proper Remedy. It is the most natural State of Man, and therefore the State in which you will find solid Happiness. Your Reason against entering into it at present appears to be not well founded. The Circumstantial Advantages you have in View by Postponing it, are not only uncertain, but they are small in comparison with the Thing itself, the being married and settled. It is the Man and Woman united that makes the complete human Being. Separate she wants his force of Body and Strength of Reason; he her Softness, Sensibility and acute Discernment. Together they are most likely to succeed in the World. A single Man has not nearly the Value he would have in that State of Union. He is an incomplete Animal. He resembles the odd Half of a Pair of Scissors.
If you get a prudent, healthy wife, your Industry in your Profession, with her good Economy, will be a Fortune sufficient.
